Blue/Gray Range Natural Cleft PA Flagstone
A Formal, Yet Natural Look
A Formal, Yet Natural Look
The Blue to Gray range offers the most consistent and tightly controlled color selection in our natural cleft paving. By limiting the palette to only blue and gray tones, this option creates a clean, uniform look that many homeowners prefer for more formal designs. Additionally, the restricted color range helps each project maintain a cohesive appearance from one stone to the next. Because of this consistency, the blue/gray range works especially well for patios, walkways, and architectural spaces that benefit from a refined aesthetic.
Finally, the photos below showcase completed installations that feature our natural cleft paving in this popular color range.
Natural cleft paving offers a naturally textured surface that provides excellent traction while still supporting furniture, foot traffic, and everyday wear. This texture forms during the splitting process, giving each piece a durable, non‑slip finish ideal for outdoor use.
Natural cleft paving varies in thickness because the stone breaks along its internal layers. These variations occur in all split‑faced bluestone. The average ½″ material ranges from about ⅜″ to ¾″. Average 1″ material ranges from roughly ¾″ to 1¼″. The average 1½″ material ranges from approximately 1¼″ to 2″. These ranges help installers choose the right thickness for each type of project.
For most residential installations, contractors set the average 1″ natural cleft paving in a mortar bed over a poured concrete slab. They then point the joints with a specific mortar mix to lock everything in place. In contrast, the average 1½″ material works best in a dry‑pack setting over compacted crushed stone, and the joints can be swept with sand or grit. Some homeowners also choose polymeric sand for dry‑set patios; however, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, since residue can remain on the bluestone and may require an acid wash to remove.
